So How Was the Bob Dylan Concert?

Dylan fans won’t like this post. But read on, anyway.

I actually won two tickets in a competition that I thought for sure I’d never win. To enter, you had to say, in as few words as possible, why you want to go to the concert. I said: because I didn’t see him at Sinai.

So a day before the concert, I got an SMS from the contest organizers (Mako) — which I thought was a joke at first —  I felt, hey, wow. I actually won the tickets. And then, after I let everyone and their sister know, I realized: I don’t want to go. I like some of his songs, but they are usually way too long and long winded. His voice — especially when it tries to hit a higher note — sounds like a screechy, out-of-tune instrument. And if you’ve ever seen any Dylan show documentaries, you’d see he treats his audience with disdain.

What was I to do? My daughter was willing to go with me, but I wasn’t interested. She thought I was being Polish, but after some discussion, was persuaded of my sincerity. She found someone who would appreciate them, and they did.

Some people were shocked that I’d give away the tickets:

“But it’s Dylan.”

“But you entered a competition. Why did you do it if you didn’t want it?”

So my answer is: just because I won the tickets, just because it’s free, doesn’t mean it’s a good price.

I went to the Jerusalem Light Show instead. Lots of fun. That was free, too.
